West Highland Terriers, or "Westies" are compact and sturdy earthdogs who were bred to be rat hunters. They have a high prey drive and an independent spirit.
Westies are highly adaptable, making them great companions and adventurers. Because of their tendency to chase, they do best with a fenced-in yard.
10-11 inches
15-20 lbs
Westies are extremely low shedders and are considered hypoallergenic.
Westies require frequent grooming. Their coats are naturally stiff and hard. Stripping or plucking the old, dead hair is the best way to take care of their coat. Bathing should be done every four to 6 weeks is sufficient and should not be exceeded, as bathing too often can damage their hard coat. To keep their coat clean between baths, they can be wiped down.
Westies are an active and playful breed. They love exploring and need to be exercised daily.
